Frontier Military Historic Byway

From Civil War skirmishes to logistical hurdles, the path to freedom is not an easy one.  The Frontier Military Historic Byway follows a 19^th-century trail used by the Army to transport soldiers and supplies across eastern Kansas, but don’t be fooled into thinking that the history here is long gone. Learn and reflect at the site of one of the largest cavalry battles of the Civil War. Be transported in time at historical forts along the route. When you’re here, you’ve woven yourself into history.

Brown v Board of Education National Historic Site – Topeka

History was made in these hallowed halls. The Brown v. Board of Education case ended legal segregation in public schools, and the former Monroe Elementary School was ground zero for this ground-breaking legislation. Walk the halls of history and explore exhibits that take a look at how this landmark case has shaped the world we live in today. Don’t miss the ‘Clark Doll’ located near the museum’s entrance. This doll was one of the original four dolls used by Kenneth and Mamie Clark in experiments that showed the effect that segregation had on the mental well-being, a foundation for the Supreme Court’s decision in the BvB case.

Richard Allen Cultural Center and Museum -  Leavenworth

The impact of buffalo soldiers has been widely underappreciated in American history, but at the Richard Allen Cultural Center the legacy of buffalo soldiers is alive and well. This museum also offers artifacts from the Bethel AME Church Underground Railroad Site, memorabilia from notable Black Americans, and a collection of items from local African-American history. We recommend that you request a tour if staff is available during your visit

If you haven't ever picked your own produce, then you need to visit Berry Hill UPick Farm. This awesome place is only a few miles southeast of Topeka. If you love fresh fruits, then be sure to check out their fresh strawberries this May-June, and tasty watermelons in June-July. They also have great photo opportunities for those who are fans of the famous Kansas Sunflower!

Hillsdale State Park -  Paola

The rolling hills of eastern Kansas make for the perfect sunset over Hillsdale Lake. This State Park is perfect for an outdoor getaway and has opportunities for model airplane and drone flying, disc golf, archery, horseback riding, hiking, water sports, camping, and more.

Prairie Spirit Trail - Ottawa

The Prairie Spirit Trail State Park was the first rails-to-trails site in Kansas. This 51-mile trail is a unique linear park spanning three counties and 8 pocket parks along the way. The trail is a hard-packed limestone screening surface in rural areas and is paved with asphalt through several communities. It’s great for hiking, running, biking, and wildlife watching.
