Western Vistas Historic Byway

History, Heritage, & Museums

History buffs love the Western Vistas Historic Byway, where yesterday's wild west meets today's travelers.

Here, in western Kansas, is the Wild, Wild West of legend, where Native Americans hunted bison, pioneers trekked, and rustlers roamed - all attempting to eke out a living. You can explore Fort Wallace, "the fightin-est Fort in the West," walk in the footsteps of bison hunter Buffalo Bill Cody, and visit Battle Canyon (Punished Woman's Fork), the site of the last conflict between Native Americans (the Cheyenne) and the United States troops. Visitors can also visit the El Cuartelejo Pueblo Ruins at the Historic Lake Scott State Park. Those also interested in natural history will love the Fick Fossil and History Museum!
