The tree belongs to Bill Coursen and sits on property owned by Jeanne Riggs in downtown Burlingame.The Burlingame Burl Oak is 157 years old. They grow at a rate of 1 foot per year, commonly living to be 200 - 300 years old. The Burl itself is 5'1" tall and is 11' 7" around. The total weight is 7,630 lbs.
The hat and facial features were designed and made by Maynard Smith. The Burlingame Chamber of Commerce was instrumental in getting this on display. The tree was inspected and the measurements were done by David Bruton of the Kansas Forest Service.
