In the age of instant communication, it's easy to forget the effort once required to carry a message across the country. But the land here remembers, and the story still lingers. The Pony Express Historic Byway shines a light on the lightning-fast riders who traversed these plains to deliver what we now take for granted. If you’re quiet, you may just hear the echoes of a galloping steed and its rider on the wind, early in the journey to bring the written word across the wild frontier.
Distance: 122 miles
Traveling east to west (Troy to Hanover) - The route begins at mile marker number 381 on Highway 36 to the east of Troy. Continue west until you reach the intersection of Hwy 26 and K-7. Turn south onto K-7 and continue onward for a few miles until you reach the intersection of K-7 and K-20. Once you near K-20, turn right and follow K-20 through the towns of Bandena, Denton, and Eversest. Continue southward on K-20 until you reach the intersection for Highway 73. Make a right onto Hwy 73 towards Horton and continue onwards for a few more miles past the city of Horton. Once you reach Hwy 75 just west of Horton, turn right and head northward toward the city of Fairview. Once you have reached Fairview, make a left turn and get back on Hwy 36. You'll stay westbound on Hwy 36 for roughly 50 miles until you reach Marysville. Once you've reached Marysville, continue west until you reach the intersection for Hwy 36 and K-148. Turn north towards Hanover, and you will eventually complete your journey at the Hollenberg Pony Express Station State Historic Site.
Traveling west to east (Hanover to Troy) - Begin your drive at the Hollenberg Pony Express Station State Historic Site, which is just a few miles north of Hwy 36. Start heading south from Hanover towards Hwy 36. Once you've reached the intersection for Hwy 26 and K-148, make a left turn towards the city of Marysville. Once you have made it to Marysville, continue on Hwy 36 for roughly 50 miles until you have reached the city of Fairview. When you have reached Fairview, begin heading southward toward Hwy 75. You'll drive on Hwy 75 for a few miles until you reach the intersection of Hwy 75 and K-20. Turn left to head east on K-20 towards the city of Horton. After making it to Horton, continue eastbound on, and you will eventually transition onto Hwy 73. Continue east on Hwy 73 until you reach the intersection of Hwy 73 and K-20. At this intersection, you will turn left to head north towards the city of Everest. Follow the road past Evererst and through the towns of Denton and Bendena. Continue a few miles past Bendena to reach the intersection of K-20 and K-7. Make a left turn to head north towards Hwy 36. Once you've made it back to Hwy 36, make a right turn to head east to the city of Troy. Your journey will conclude on Hwy 36 just east of Troy.
