The Smith Hotel, the first home station of the Pony Express west of St. Joseph, MO, was located across from the present museum. The museum contains a saloon, blacksmith shop, schoolroom, stables, kitchen with many items from the Smith Hotel, a parlor and bedroom typical of the hotel. Many items in the museum originally belonged to the Smith family but are on loan to the museum. Although the Pony Express was only in existence for 18 months, it played an important and exciting role in the development of the Western Frontier.
