Chocolate and Valentine’s Day go hand in hand, but Kansas and chocolate? Surprisingly, yes! From an assortment of chocolatiers with shops to visit to imaginative chocolate-themed events and activities, Kansas makes a delicious and romantic Valentine’s destination for chocolate‑loving couples.

We even own a small piece of chocolate-making history: Russell Stover was born near Alton, Kansas, in 1888. He and his wife, Clara, started selling homemade boxes of chocolate candies in Denver, Colorado, in 1923, and a century later, Russell Stover Candies remains an iconic name in confectionery. There are several stores in the state, including the Russell Stover Candies Factory Outlet in Abilene, roughly 130 miles from where Russell was born.

Small-Batch Chocolate Shops

Today, chocolatiers in Kansas are mostly family-owned operations focused on using premium ingredients and creating delicious chocolates and confections in small batches.

The mother-daughter team of Toni Bowling and Kim Redeker opened The Sweet Granada in 2004 in Emporia’s arts and entertainment district. Their small retail space is packed with a large selection of handmade gourmet confections, from top-selling truffles to clusters, barks, and more. The addictive Pop-Choc starts with gourmet buttered popcorn and only gets better from there, with thick ribbons of white and milk chocolate drizzled on top.

Master chocolatier Beth Tully started Cocoa Dolce in Wichita in 2005, and today the Voegeli family operates three Wichita locations (DowntownNew Market SquareBradley Fair) that invite guests to immerse themselves in their sweet lounges. All candies, chocolates, and drinks are handcrafted in-house in small batches, preservative-free, and made with responsibly sourced ingredients. Each piece is made with premium Belgian chocolate, features a unique design, and is filled with a rich ganache. The lounges serve an array of sweet treats, all available thoughtfully paired with espresso, wine, and spirits.

Owners Nick and Terry Xidis invest their hearts and hands in Hazel Hill Chocolate Traditions, where Nick is a third-generation chocolatier in a business that opened in 2006 in Topeka. Named for Terry’s grandmother, Hazel Hill uses only the finest ingredients, chocolate, fresh cream, and butter to make small batches of truffles, turtles, butter toffee popcorn, and more by hand. The open shop layout allows you to watch chocolate production.

Annedore’s Fine Chocolates began more than 30 years ago in Westwood Hills and now has three Kansas locations, all near the Kansas City metro area. Each batch of European-style truffles is stirred by hand in a copper kettle to deliver maximum flavor.

CST Sweets in Bonner Springs has been crafting small‑batch brittles, toffees, and chocolate confections since 2003. This minority‑owned, family‑built company blends nostalgic recipes with fresh, inventive flavors, all made with premium ingredients. The shop also puts community at the heart of its work through partnerships with local organizations. Visitors can browse the retail space and watch treats come to life in the kitchen, making for a deliciously memorable stop.

Hot Cocoa Flights & More

A true chocoholic wants to try all the flavors, which makes a hot cocoa flight satisfyingly indulgent and fun. A flight generally features four smaller-sized drinks for sampling and comparing. They may have creative toppers or booze options, too. Check with your favorite coffeehouse or start with this curated list – shops that offer seasonal coffee drink flights will often swap out the espresso for cocoa upon request. It’s an especially cozy pick for a romantic Valentine’s outing, perfect for sharing (or not!).

Wine & Chocolates Pairings

If sipping wine and sampling decadent chocolates is your idea of a good time, you’re going to love it here. From the Chocolate Crawl & Wine Walk in downtown Hutchinson to the Girl Scout Cookie Wine Pairing at White Tail Run Winery in Edgerton, many communities, as well as our growing number of Kansas wineries and vineyards, offer these events on Valentine’s weekend.

Cocoa Dolce’s lounges in Wichita feature chocolate pairings year-round with their menu of wine, cocktails, spirits, and beer, and they also offer wine-infused flavors.

Thoughtful Valentine’s Gifts

Goodies from these shops make great gifts for Valentine’s Day, or anytime. If you can’t pick up an order in-store, many Kansas chocolate shops listed above ship nationwide; check websites for details. Beyond truffles and clusters, you can gift chocolate bars, sauces, drink mixes, chocolate-flavored coffee roasts, and much more.

For a truly memorable gift, pair a box of chocolates with tickets for you and your sweetheart to attend the annual Death by Chocolate adults-only evening at Wichita’s Exploration Place. The fundraiser (on March 7 this year) features decadent desserts, gourmet bites, and crafted cocktails from the region’s top restaurants, bakeries, and mixologists.
