Observatories

Kansas has many observatories for visitors to enjoy the power of the telescope! If you have an urge to see just how magnificent the cosmos is, then you should visit these observatories in Kansas.

Keep in mind that observatories are weather-dependent! Please check each of their websites for the most up-to-date information.

Banner Creek Observatory

Banner Creek Observatory - Located in Holton, and ideal for all ages! Not only do they cater to schools, but they also host regular events for pre-school-aged kids every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month. They also host observations that are open to the public. You can find their schedule here.

Farpoint Observatory

Farpoint Observatory - Located in Eskridge (Wabaunsee County), this observatory is owned by the Northeast Kansas Amateur Astronomers’ League. This observatory is also open to schools for educational field trips. You can also enjoy monthly public viewings -- check their schedule here

PSU-Greenbush Observatory

PSU-Greenbush Observatory - Did we mention that these places tend to be very educational? Well, over the last 30 years, the PSU-Greenbush Observatory has been educating curious minds not far from the Pittsburg State campus in the city of Girard, KS. They host monthly star parties, and their schedule can be found here.

Lake Afton Observatory

Lake Afton Observatory - Located near Wichita, in the suburb of Goddard, this observatory offers weekly reservations and welcomes walk-ins -- so just show up! You can find their complete list of hours, as well as the link to make a reservation, right here.

Natural Hotspots

Feat your eyes on the Kansas sky with your own eyes! Of course, if you insist, you can still bring your own telescope along for maximum enjoyment! These so-called "hotspots" for stargazing are entirely natural, meaning they lack the light pollution that impedes our view of the bright night sky.

Mushroom Rock State Park

Mushroom Rock State Park - This state park is 100% free to visit! This means you can simply make an appearance to stargaze! The Go.Astronomy website lists Mushroom Rock as a 2 on the Bortle Scale (1 is the darkest), making it an almost perfect setting for a dark night sky! This is truly where geology and astronomy come together in the most fascinating of ways!

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve - The Tallgrass Prairie is one the most beautiful attractions you can visit in Kansas. WIth over 10,000 acres of some of America's last remaining Tallgrass Prairie, visitors can hike next to Bison (just keep a safe distance) across the rolling Flint Hills. It's also home to one of the most historic ranches ever built in Kansas. It's easily one of the best places you can enjoy scenery in the state!

Quviria and Cheyenne Bottoms

Quviria and Cheyenne Bottoms - These two attractions are part of the Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway, and are rightfully known for migratory birds. While avian species certainly dominate the skies of this area, visitors can also grab some amazing views of the night sky too!

Mount Sunflower

Mount Sunflower (State's Highest Point) - Now we are just following simple logic. If you wanna see the stars, you may as well get closer to them. Mount Sunflower rises to an altitude of just over 4,000 feet above sea level, and, of course, in combination with its lack of severe light pollution, you get the best of both worlds!
