Imagine embarking on an exciting trek alongside scenic river valleys and rolling hills, past lush woodlands, and charming small towns with wonders just waiting to be explored. All this—and so much more—can be yours when you pedal or hike along Kansas's remarkable and extensive Rails to Trails network.

The Sunflower State is teeming with exhilarating outdoor explorations and unexpected landscapes you can discover on uniquely repurposed railway corridors. Our state boasts nearly 300 miles of rail trails that invite you to get lost and find yourself in America's heartland. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your next adventure.

Rails to Trails Locations

Whether you're a casual cyclist, an avid hiker, or a family looking for a safe outdoor activity, Kansas' Rails to Trails system offers something for everyone. When mapping out your course, consider these stunning pathways, which feature some of the best scenery in the Midwest.

Flint Hills Nature Trail

Stretching an impressive 118 miles across Kansas, the Flint Hills Nature Trail is the longest trail in the state and the eighth-longest rail trail in America. This outstanding pathway follows the general route of the Santa Fe National Historic Trail, extending from Osawatomie in the east to Herington in the west, passing through local communities filled with hidden gems. Along the way, you can savor breathtaking views of one of the world's last remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystems. Keep an eye out for diverse wildlife, from prairie chickens to white-tailed deer, as well as wildflowers in spring and colorful foliage come autumn.

This trek offers a relatively easy ride or hike, with a crushed stone surface that's suitable for most bicycles and a gentle grade that makes it an easy choice for a variety of fitness levels. More experienced explorers will find that the trail's length provides ample opportunity for more challenging, extended journeys over several days. No matter your fitness level, be sure to bring adequate supplies as some sections of the trail take you through a countryside setting with limited resources.

Prairie Spirit Trail

Prairie Spirit Trail State Park offers a different but equally captivating experience. This 51-mile trail runs from Ottawa in the north to Iola in the south, cutting through the eastern Kansas woodlands and rolling hills. Here, you can enjoy a diverse array of experiences—from peaceful wooded sections to open prairie vistas—as you pass through several small towns, each with its own charm and history. Be sure to stop and explore Garnett's historic downtown or enjoy a picnic in one of the trailside parks.

The trail’s difficulty level is generally easy to moderate, with a few gentle grades that provide a bit of a challenge without being overwhelming. This makes this journey accessible to everyone from bicyclists to joggers and horseback riders. Cyclists should consider using a bike with slightly wider tires to comfortably handle the crushed limestone surface. But whether you travel this path on foot, hoof, or wheels, you’ll enjoy a shady tree canopy that covers much of the trail, making this a refreshing year-round destination.

What to Know Before You Go

When embarking on a Rails to Trails adventure in Kansas, be sure to check trail conditions before setting out, as weather can significantly impact trail quality, especially on crushed stone surfaces. You’ll also want to dress in layers, wear sunscreen and insect repellent, and carry snacks and basic first-aid supplies. For cyclists, a repair kit including a spare tube, pump, and multitool can be a ride-saver.
