Owners David and Jan Vanderbilt started outfitting customers in boots and jeans almost 40 years ago in Wamego, Kansas.
When they first opened the doors in 1973, Vanderbilt's was a "smaller version of a Ben Franklin" discount department store. "Customers would ask why we didn't carry boots or jeans," David says. "We bought small lots and they sold well. Kansas has real western roots, and when the 'Urban Cowboy' came along in 1979, the fashion lemmings expanded the market we were already in."
David and Jan Vanderbilt say the key to their success has always been listening to the customer. Over the years, Vanderbilt's grew from their flagship store in Wamego, Kansas to 7 company owned stores and 2 franchise operations in two states. Now David and Jan's two sons, Thomas and Andrew Vanderbilt, run the 7 family owned stores and two additional stores are franchised.
This boot and jean outfitter is the largest of its kind in the state of Kansas and is best known for it's unending rows of work boots and jeans at discount prices. "Brands and products that we carry have changed over the years, but the same low discount prices and loyal customer service applies," says Andrew Vanderbilt. "So many big box retailers may be able to get a product at a cheap price, but they're leaving out quality, value, and customer service. People aren't just a number with us, and THAT is the difference in a family owned business."
It's an easy choice for people shopping for boots. Vanderbilt's has a low price guarantee on any in stock boot they carry, as well as customer service in stores to measure your foot to ensure the best possible fit. As their jingle touts "your work boot center. Vanderbilt's."
