Tuttle Creek Reservoir, State Park and Wildlife Area
5800A River Pond Rd, Manhattan, KS 66502
Located about 2 miles north of Manhattan, east of K-177 (Tuttle Creek Blvd.)
Tuttle Creek State Park offers visitors a broad variety of outdoor recreation possibilities and plenty of room to roam. At about 12,500 acres with 100 miles of rugged, wooded shoreline, Tuttle Creek Reservoir is the second largest body of water in Kansas. The 1,200-acre Tuttle Creek State Park consists of four units – River Pond, Cedar Ridge, Fancy Creek and Randolph. About 20 miles of trails are available, including equestrian, mountain biking, hiking and nature trails. There is a challenging 6-mile long mountain biking/hiking trail at the Fancy Creek Area near Randolph.
Fishing in the reservoir – especially for crappie, channel catfish, flathead catfish and bass – is good, and there is year-round trout fishing in the River Pond area. The wildlife area comprises 12,200 acres with ample opportunity for hunting and wildlife watching.
An18-hole disc golf course is located in the River Pond Area, and canoe and kayak rentals are available during appropriate weather times in the River Pond Area. The state-of-the-art Fancy Creek Shooting Range is open the first and third full weekends of each month. A new archery range is now open at River Pond.
Tuttle Creek State Park headquarters is the place to rent kayaks or canoes for reasonable prices. You can haul them the few miles to the Kansas River if you like. Don’t overlook a chance to float the 80-acre lake in River Pond Campground, yards from where you get your kayak or canoe. Sheltered by Tuttle Creek’s dam on one side, and ringed in tall cottonwoods, it’s one of the most peaceful floating and camping areas in Kansas. Be sure to take a fishing pole and binoculars. The lake has good populations of saugeye, white bass and catfish. There’s also a nesting pair of bald eagles in a tall tree at the water’s edge.Tuttle Creek Reservoir is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
