The Riley County Historical Society was organized in 1914, and the log cabin was its first major project. Many of the original members had helped to settle Riley County in the 1850s and 1860s, and their story of settlement is retold through examples of the many objects they used to shape a new settlement in the tallgrass prairie. The cabin was a place to present their experiences and display historic artifacts that represent a unique difficult way of life. The cabin was built on its present site in City Park from donated materials, primarily walnut logs, by volunteers.
