National Memorial to Fallen Educators
18th & Merchant, ESU Campus, Emporia, KS 66801
The first National Memorial in Kansas is dedicated to remembering those who have given their all for their profession. A moving outdoor memorial, located on the Emporia State University Campus, 18th and Merchant.
The National Teachers Hall of Fame partnered with Emporia State University to create a permanent tribute to educators who lost their lives while on duty in their PreK-12 schools. A dedication ceremony was held at the site at 18th and Merchant on the ESU campus on June 12, 2014. The memorial includes the names of 119 educators including teachers, administrators and education support professionals who were killed “in the line of duty,” dating back to 1764. Research and fundraising are underway to expand the memorial site to include educators from higher education who lost their lives while serving in their professional roles. Sadly, seven more names were added, with tributes being paid during the re-dedication ceremony June 21, 2018.
