K-State’s Olathe Horticulture Center is in western Johnson County just minutes from Kansas City. The Center specializes in vegetable and turf grass research with indoor and outdoor growing plots, native grassland, and woodland. The main building has an indoor, av-equipped classroom with wireless internet. Outdoor learning can accommodate nearly any size group on the Center’s 350 acres. The Center hosts the Johnson County Extension Master Gardeners’ Backyard Garden demonstration plot. Horticulture science lab experiences for school groups are offered during the Spring and Fall semesters and for summer day camp groups. For $5 per student, Center staff provide materials for on-site lab exercises in plant, soil, and wildlife sciences. The center is also home to the 18-hole Spoon Creek Disc Golf course. All activities require reservations. The Center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday except State-designated holidays.
