The Iwo Jima Memorial was originally located at the present site of the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at WaKeeney. Several years before the ground-breaking ceremony for the Northwest Kansas Cemetery, local veterans were trying to promote WaKeeney as the location for the new cemetery. They designed and built the Iwo Jima silhouette with donations of cash and labor donated from many volunteers. Then shortly before the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Veterans' Cemetery, the silhouette was moved to its present location along I-70 at Exit 128. The Cemetery is located a few blocks north of the Memorial. The formal dedication was held on November 9, 2007, by the American Legion - Moore Post #197.
