In 1855 Charles Fuller built a ranch just west of Running Turkey Creek on the Santa Fe Trail. This was the first white settlement in McPherson County. The ranch was a wayside inn where travelers could stop, eat a good meal, rest and water their stock. This also became the site of the town of Empire, which moved to Galva when the ATSF train tracks were completed in 1879. This site is also important because in 1849 the Cherokee Trail met up with the Santa Fe Trail at Running Turkey Creek.
