What's In A Name
Apt. 6 was started in the 1980’s by McPherson resident Vi Lundquist as a resale store to benefit the McPherson Opera House; fully operated by volunteers and accepting only donated items to offer for sale. The name has a rich and colorful history. It comes from the store’s first location, the apartment built under the auditorium during the 1925-1929 remodel of the McPherson Opera House whose number was “6”. Outgrowing the space and needing to relocate during the building renovations and the apartment’s conversion to theatre dressing rooms, Apt. 6 moved to and from several graciously donated spaces on or near McPherson’s Main Street. For over 26 years and enduring several moves, the store was a consistent and important source of income for the Opera House. In 2015, the store closed as the lease on donated space had expired and a new location could not be found. Fortunately, the closure was not for long. In late 2015, the Opera House purchased the property at 217 S Main – the former Old Muffin Factory building owned by Les and Kayla Mason – that gave the store a permanent location. At that time, a new name was established: McPherson Opera House Resale & Consignment Shop. In a desire to honor its notable history, in 2019 the Apt. 6 name was resurrected and added to the title of the store: “Apt. 6 – McPherson Opera House Resale & Consignment Shop.”
