Kansas may be synonymous with wheat fields and corn, but it’s also becoming a hub for innovation in sustainable agriculture. During my visit to Prairie Band Ag last fall, I discovered how this small, yet mighty operation is revolutionizing the industrial hemp industry while giving back to its local community.

The Warm Welcome to Prairie Band Ag

When I arrived at Prairie Band Ag, I was greeted by Zach, the Operations Manager, who instantly made me feel at home. Zach’s knowledge of hemp farming is vast, and his passion for sustainability shone through as he walked me through the fields of hemp that had just been harvested for the season. Although the fields were empty when I visited, Zach explained how their farming practices are designed for long-term sustainability, utilizing regenerative techniques to nourish the soil and ensure a healthy crop year after year.

From Field to Facility: The Hemp Processing Journey

As we made our way to the processing facility, I could already hear the hum of machinery at work. Inside, the team was busy preparing hemp bales for processing. Watching the process unfold was an eye-opening experience. From the moment the hemp entered the machine, I saw it separated into various forms, each destined for a different sustainable product. Zach took me step-by-step through the equipment and explained how different parts of the hemp plant are used. One of the most impressive products I learned about was the Hemp Hurd—a versatile, eco-friendly material that’s used for animal bedding and Hempcrete, a sustainable alternative to concrete.

Introducing Mnokiwèn: A Sustainable Future with Hemp

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of Prairie Band Ag’s work is their innovative new line of bioplastic straws. These straws are made from Micronized Hemp Hurd and are branded Mnokiwèn (Potawatomi for "good earth"). It’s remarkable to see a company take an environmental issue like plastic waste and turn it into a meaningful solution that also supports the community. Every part of the hemp plant is used at Prairie Band Ag, ensuring that nothing goes to waste and that every product serves a purpose. This holistic approach to farming and production is what makes Prairie Band Ag stand out as a leader in sustainable agriculture.

A Lasting Impact on the Kansas Community

What truly sets Prairie Band Ag apart is its commitment to economic development and community empowerment. Through its work, Prairie Band Ag is creating jobs, supporting local farmers, and helping to preserve the land for future generations. It’s clear that Prairie Band Ag is more than just a business—it’s a cornerstone of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation’s future prosperity.

As Kansas continues to evolve as a leader in agritourism, Prairie Band Ag offers a perfect example of how tradition and innovation can work hand-in-hand to create a thriving, sustainable community. I encourage anyone visiting Kansas to take a tour of Prairie Band Ag and learn about the incredible work they’re doing to shape the future of agriculture.
