A look back at the covers that defined KANSAS!

A magazine cover serves as its calling card, a visual representation of its identity and purpose. It sets the tone, giving readers a preview of the stories featured inside. The design, photography and typography are not just aesthetic choices but intentional signals that convey the magazine’s voice and focus.

From its origins as a tool for promoting industrial growth to its evolution into a celebrated lifestyle and travel magazine, KANSAS! has mirrored the shifting identity of the state it represents. Over the decades, the magazine has transitioned from focusing on development and infrastructure to showcasing Kansas’ culture and natural beauty.

To the Stars Era (1940s–1950s)

First released in November 1945, the magazine was titled To the Stars and was an industry newsletter for the Kansas Industrial Development Commission. Its masthead was utilitarian and its purpose was clear: promote Kansas as a growing hub for industry in postwar America. A touch of personality eventually emerged in the 1950s with themed covers such as the “Tourist” issue, which introduced a lively hand-drawn logo paired with striking black-and-white photography.

Embracing Regional Identity (1960s–1980s)

As the state’s narrative shifted, so did the magazine’s focus. By the 1960s, it rebranded as KANSAS!—a bold declaration of state pride. During this time, the covers leaned heavily on color photography and vibrant illustrations that focused on the state’s natural beauty and rural charm. The typography and design became cleaner, reflecting the shift from a business-driven newsletter to a culture and lifestyle magazine.

A Modern Lifestyle Icon (2000s–present)

In recent decades, KANSAS! has fully embraced its role as a legacy lifestyle and travel magazine. The design reflects contemporary trends with sleek, modern mastheads and visually compelling layouts. As the magazine’s feature stories have become more dynamic, so have the covers. Rich in striking imagery and captivating designs, KANSAS! has continually received awards for its covers. Most recently, the 2024 “Notorious” issue, which featured a cover created by Lawrence artist Torren Thomas, won a Gold award from the International Regional Media Association.

Each cover is a visual narrative, inviting readers to explore the stories within. As the magazine continues to thrive and adapt, it remains a testament to the spirit of Kansas
