Established in 1981 on 28 acres in Hesston, this open air domain affords visitors the rare opportunity to experience the wildflowers of the Great Plains in cultivation. The hundreds of labeled varieties of native and adaptable wildflowers, grasses, shrubs and trees are a lexicon of the possibilities of native plant gardening. A staff which includes some of the area’s foremost authorities on native plants is available for scheduled tours, programs, landscaping ideas, and prairie restoration assistance. The Visitor Center is open Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on week-ends in summer from 1 – 4 p.m. with a gift shop featuring nature-related items. The facilities can be rented for weddings, family gatherings, church and business retreats; and tours are available by reservation.
Seminars and Classes Speakers explore topics on natural history, environmental landscaping, prairie conservation and ecology, and the arts. For the current schedule of classes and indoor concerts overlooking the gardens and the lake, go to www.dyckarboretum.org.
