Historic Kansas Forts & Trails

You'll find numerous historic forts and trails when traveling in Kansas. The state was once a major part of the Santa Fe, California, and Oregon trail systems. Part of what ensured the safety of those seeking to travel west, especially after the American Civil, was a series of forts established in Kansas. Two of these forts, Fort Scott and Fort Larned, welcome visitors to this day and are even on the national register of historic places.

In addition to two forts designated national historical sites, Kansas is home to two forts actively serving current U.S. military operations: Fort Riley | Fort Leavenworth. To see the full list of historic forts and trails, be sure to browse our list below to see what interests you!
