Rail Trails

From adventurous cycling with scenic views to casual, family friendly rides, Kansas rail trails appeal to all levels of cycling – with the safety and convenience of being car-free!

Kansas already offers nearly 300 ever-increasing miles of rail trails. Our two longest rail trails – Prairie Spirit Trail and Flint Hills Trail State Park – meet in Ottawa in eastern Kansas. They’re fun trails for a quick ride or an all-day adventure. These relatively flat trails provide woodland canopy, a perfect shade during hot summer months. You’ll ride through charming towns that welcome cyclists and hikers alike.

Travel west on the Flint Hills Trail to Council Grove (or start there!) and enjoy breathtaking views of the scenic Flint Hills. Then stop to explore historic sites like Allegawaho Heritage Memorial Park.

Thanks to organizations like Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and Kanza Rail-Trails Conservancy, more trails are continually being developed. Cyclists seeking rail-trail races can look forward to annual events like Rush the Rails, with more popping up every year.

Whether you’re here for a race or a casual ride, we have the information you need to plan a great rail-trail ride. Share your experience with us by using #ToTheStarsKS on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook!
