Once the best wheat market in the county with three or four elevators, Frederick’s single elevator now stands as the lone business as an active grain-handling facility for both farm intake and rail shipping from the elevator. Frederick, one of the nine incorporated cities of Rice County is located in the north central part of the county. The population was 11 at the 2000 census. The city is the second-smallest incorporated city in Kansas, larger than only Freeport (population 6). Frederick’s destiny is in question with the issue of unincorporating on the voting ballot in November, 2016.
