The sign on the road traveling into Alden says: “Alden. A Kansas Pride Community.” The Kansas Pride Program aids communities in identifying what they want to preserve, create or improve for their future. Alden epitomizes the preservation of the Midwest work ethics and the pride in their town. Prairie Flower Crafts and Quilting was started in 1970 by Sara Fair Sleeper. The ladies of the community needed some fabric for the backs of quilts they were working on and a bigger gathering place to work. Sara bought a building and opened the shop. She sold craft and quilting supplies as well as wicker baskets and furniture too. In 2013, Sara retired at the age of 96. Over the years, the store has seen many changes, and now is primarily a fabric/quilt shop with over 5000 bolts of fabric, many notions, gift items and books.
