Sand Hills State Park has 14 miles of trails for hiking, biking or exploring via horseback. Hikers and mountain bikers need to remember these trails are through soft sand which adds to the workout and the feeling of accomplishment. But that same sand adds greatly to the natural experience at Sand Hills State Park. The sand dunes hold many specialized plants not found over most of Kansas. Much of the wildlife and uses the sandy habitat, from wild flowers to songbirds and reptiles, are also highly specialized. Take your time and look into the depths of the park’s many thickets of wild plums and you should find some of the area’s most reclusive songbirds.
