“Come home” to Pioneer Bluffs, where you are welcomed by a friendly docent eager to share stories of the tallgrass prairie and Flint Hills ranching heritage. While here, take time to enjoy a simpler life—sit on the front porch and rock, have a meal at the picnic tables, or skip rocks on the creek. Discover local art, books by local authors, gifts, even a place to play a game of checkers in the Pioneer Bluffs home. Take a self-guided tour of the National Register Historic District. Programs are scheduled throughout the year, and include: The Prairie Talk series, offering community discussions on history, farming and ranching, ecology, family heritage, and sustainability. The Fall Ranch Party, held annually on the first Saturday in October is a celebration of community and local food. The day includes family activities, arts and crafts fair, car and tractor show, petting zoo, local food, history demonstrations, and live music. Now and Then community events feature music, theater, and fun from the past and present. A Day on the Prairie gives school children a chance to unplug for a day outdoors— they wade and hike along the the creek, skip rocks, learning about history, explore an old barn. Volunteer workdays, held the first Saturday of every month, bring together dozens of volunteers working to preserve this historic site. The story of Pioneer Bluffs began in 1859 when Charles Rogler, a young Austrian immigrant, walked from Iowa to build a new life in Kansas. Charles’ son, Henry, and in turn a grandson, Wayne, later took the reins, making the farm/ranch operation one of the most well- respected in the region. Today, Pioneer Bluffs is a nonprofit organization that carries on the Rogler legacy of respecting the land, preserving history, and serving community with today’s pioneers. Spring, Summer, and Fall hours are Fridays and Saturdays, noon to 5 pm. Always open by appointment for group and wedding tours.
