Opened since 1982, the Museum of the Great Plains has a unique collection that will pull you back to the days of the wild west. The highlights of this extensive museum include the Wichita County Seat War, Marion Bonner Fossil Finds, saddles and local cattle brands, mustache cups and violins. There's something for every historical taste from military and Old West, to quilts and nice china. There's even an exhibit highlighting the accomplishments of hometown professional athlete, Steve Tasker. The real trip to the past comes when you head downstairs and are transported to a replica of an Old West town. Walk along the wooden boardwalk past store fronts of the old days. Make sure you check out the collection of Wichita County High School memorabilia.

In addition to the Museum of the Great Plains, the Wichita County Historical Society has recently completed another great historical project. The Washington- Ames home built around 1892 has been known around Leoti as the "Big House." Originally built and owned by W.B. Washington, a lawyer who practiced here before the county was settled. The most recent owner was Margie and Oren Ames. Look in the parlor and take a peek upstairs at Margie Ames' collection of hats that number in the hundreds. For more information on the progress of the Washington-Ames house restoration, visit http://washingtonameshouse.org/ or just drop in!
