Keith Sebelius Reservoir, Prairie Dog State Park and Norton Wildlife Area
13037 State Highway 261, Norton, KS 67654
Located on the northern shore of Keith Sebelius Reservoir, about 4 miles west of Norton and 1 mile south of US-36 on K-261
A prime place to experience the shortgrass prairies of western Kansas, 1,150-acre Prairie Dog State Park is home to a thriving prairie dog colony and is the site of the last remaining adobe house in Kansas. The renovated adobe house was built on the site in the early 1890's.
Historical interpretation is a hallmark of this park. Two vintage 19th century buildings are preserved here, including a one room school and the renovated adobe house. The 1,000-acre reservoir is well- known for its excellent fishing opportunities. In recent years, anglers have found productive fishing for black bass, walleye, wiper, crappie, catfish and saugeye.
The 6,400-acre Norton Wildlife Area offers good prospects for pheasant, waterfowl and rabbits. Both white-tailed and mule deer can be found here, as well as a variety of furbearers.
Nature Trail Prairie Dog State Parks nature trail is a casual 1.4 miles in and out of trees and classic high plains prairie. Interpretive signage helps hikers learn as they go. Historic buildings A classic adobe home located in the state park helps guests understand how most pioneers lived in northwest Kansas shortly after settling in the area. A school house from the late 1800s has also been moved to the park. Prairie Dog Town Several hundred prairie dogs occupy a colony of about 10 acres at the park. Guests are encouraged to spend some time watching the largely subterranean creatures at work, and see how they create an entire ecosystem so many other creatures come to depend upon.
Keith Sebelius Reservoir (Norton Dam) is operated by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.
