The crown jewel of FHSU arts and entertainment is this uniquely modern yet historic looking facility with a seating capacity of 1100. The Hays Symphony Orchestra, ENCORE series, FHSU music department events, Hays Arts Council events and other community concerts are held here. The performing arts center is housed in Sheridan Hall which was originally built in 1915 as Sheridan Coliseum with a gymnasium and small indoor swimming pool. The building is named in honor of General Philip Sheridan who was stationed at the Fort Hays military post in the 1800s. For many years the gym was used for college basketball games and other sporting events. In 1991, a complete renovation was completed which changed the building into university office space and included the state- of-the art Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. The FHSU Encore Series has been providing musical and theatrical entertainment for more than 20 years at Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. The program usually showcases 6-10 shows per year from national touring companies. It is the goal of the Encore Series Special Events Committee to educate, inspire, invoke thought and entertain as well as promote artistic expression, cultural understanding and social awareness through high-caliber performing arts programs. Hours: M-F 8 am-4:30 pm Admission: Free – Admission fees for events vary
