The Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway is a beautiful pastoral drive between Medicine Lodge and Coldwater displaying an abundance of wildlife and wildflowers amidst the beautiful red Gypsum Hills. The red comes from the iron in the soil that "rusts" when exposed to the air. The bluffs and buttes are capped with white gypsum and are accented with the dark green of the cedars and the blue Kansas sky. Stops along the way include the Stockade Museum and Carry Nation's Home which is a National Historic Site at Medicine Lodge; Comanche County Museum in Coldwater and many other sites. Stan Herd Murals may be enjoyed in Coldwater as well as in nearby Protection and Wilmore. Recreational opportunities abound at Lake Coldwater, Barber State Fishing Lake and Memorial Peace Park.
