We are a working 1000 acre family cattle ranch in the
beautiful Flint Hills of Kansas, just 20 minutes from Manhattan or Wamego. We offer a variety of personally designed vacation plans with lodging in a ranch house in a terrific setting. We also have limited R.V, hookups.

Offered activities include horseback riding on reliable working horses, cattle drives, cattle working days and special horse events.

We also have facilities for those wanting to bring their own horses.
For those whose interest lies in non-horse activities we have numerous opportunities -- miles of hiking trails, wild life and wildflowers photography, swimming, catch and release pond/lake fishing on a 20 acre lake, lake side camping and just relaxing at the ranch house.

A once in a life time experience is the spring prairie renewal pasture burn. As the burn starts in the evening you personally take part in dragging fire and watching the hills light up as night falls and the sun sets.

Whether your interest is horse activities or just a family style vacation in a ranch setting we hope you will consider the Cowboy Way Ranch & Vacations.

Cowboy Way Ranch and Vacations: An Authentic Cowboy Experience

“There’s a right way, a wrong way and then there’s the Cowboy Way.” Located off the beaten path, but still 20 minutes from Wamego and Manhattan, this remote 1,000-acre family-owned and operated cattle ranch offers its visitors a truly “no frills” authentic cowboy experience.

“We want to do everything on this ranch as authentic as possible,” owner Trish Brackenbury said. “While some ranches use four-wheelers, plastic buckets to call cattle in, and other modern conveniences, we try to operate our ranch just like the cowboys did over 100 years ago.”

While not native Kansans, the Brackenbury family, formerly of Colorado, fell in love with the beauty of the Flint Hills when traveling through Kansas.

“We were on our way back from the coast and our van broke down,” she said. “Luckily we knew some friends from this area to call and were able to stay with them. During our stay they showed us around the country and Norm and I fell in love with the beauty of the Flint Hills and decided we wanted to move here.”

The Brackenburys purchased the 1,000-acre working ranch, formerly owned by the Marlboro Man, in the 1980’s. Then in 1995, they officially relocated to the Flint Hills. Soon following their move, their children and grandchildren also moved to the area.

“When members of our family came to visit, they fell in love with this place just as we did and gradually more and more of them moved here,” Trish said.

Today nearly all of the, more than 50 member, Brackenbury family live on or near the ranch, and share in its daily operations.

“For example, Jason likes training horses and Natasha enjoys teaching people to ride,” Theresa Brackenbury said. “From working cattle to training horses, operating the ranch house and even starting a pumpkin patch, we all work together to make the ranch a success.”

Visitors to the Cowboy Way Ranch can expect to enjoy the ultimate cowboy experience. Additionally guests can bring their own horses, or “rent” one of the family’s 15 or more, reliable working horses.

“We want to offer everything from having visitors help with working, branding and driving cattle from the pastures, to helping with our annual pasture burns,” Theresa said. “We also offer trail rides for all skill levels: beginning, intermediate and an intensive, ultimate riding challenge, which includes crossing through creeks, ponds and other obstacles, for the highly-skilled riders.”

For non-riders, the Cowboy Way Ranch offers unique hunting, fishing, hiking, swimming and bird watching opportunities, or the Ranch will create a personalized family vacation tailored to a guest’s specific interests. Guests may also choose to stay in the ranch house and enjoy the relaxed lifestyle of country living in the Flint Hills or choose to sleep outside underneath Kansas’ beautiful starry skies.

“We also offer RV hookups, so guests can bring their RV’s to the ranch,” Theresa said.

The Cowboy Way Ranch has also hosted many group trail rides to raise money for organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Multiple Sclerosis Research Center and the Chapman Disaster Relief Fund.

A close, hard-working and dedicated family, the Brackenburys have a great passion for ranching and preserving the splendor of Kansas’ Flint Hills. More importantly, they understand the amount of work and commitment it takes in order to preserve such a large ranch.

“We understand the need to diversify,” owner Norm Brackenbury said. “We know the difficulties many farmers and ranchers face. We hope that by branching into agri-tourism we will be able share this cowboy experience with people from all over the world.”
