This is a US Army Corps of Engineers Federal Lake and Recreation area with several developed parks for camping, fishing, boating, water sports and other activities.
There are 187 campsites with one campsite cove listed as being in the "top 100 family campsites in America".
Nature trails for hiking are plentiful, and there's an all-terrain vehicle trail below the dam. Fishing is year-round and offers many varieties of fish. The lake was the first in Kansas stocked with Saugeye.
Boat ramps are located throughout the parks. A Swimming beach is available and the lake's patrons are serviced by the Council Grove Marina.
