A trip to Council Grove, Kansas, and a stay at The Cottage House Hotel and Bed & Breakfast is a beautiful and captivating journey back to the days of the early West. Council Grove was a vital Santa Fe Trail town for many traders, pioneers and the site of many important historic events. Today the town boasts more than 24 registered historic sites. Many of these sites and the historic downtown shopping district are within two blocks.
The Cottage House has a long and colorful history of serving travelers. The Hotel began as a three-room cottage and blacksmith shop, built in 1867, and owned by George Biglin. In 1871, the Reverend and Mrs. Joab Spencer bought the property, built a two-story brick house engulfing the cottage, and began The Cottage House Hotel's history as a boarding house. The Spencers sold the house in 1879 to Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Mead. The Meads built a 5,000 sq. ft., two-story Queen Anne addition which marked The Cottage House Hotel's transition from boarding house to hotel. Some of the more beautiful and unique features of the Hotel are found in this addition. After use as apartments during WWII, the house was restored and beckons travelers once again.
The Cottage House is easily accessible from most Kansas Interstates and Highways. You will find the unique location, in relation to Topeka and Wichita airports, convenient to those guests flying into Kansas.
Located in the lobby is Aunt Jo’s Gift Parlor, which features a large selection of Kansas postcards, T-shirts, souvenirs, gifts, and Victorian Collectibles. A Meeting Room is available for corporate meetings and executive retreats. The Cottage House is also a popular destination for weddings, receptions and romantic honeymoons.
