The Walnut Valley Festival is one of the premier events in the Midwest. Attendees come from every state in the union and from many foreign countries as well. Visitors come not only to enjoy the music but to be a part of the festival, either through the continuous campground jam sessions or as a contestant in one of the eight different acoustic instrument contests. The Walnut Valley Festival also includes various food vendors and a large juried arts and crafts show. The festival runs Wednesday through Sunday the third weekend in September at the Winfield Fairgrounds. The 47th Walnut Valley Festival will be held September 12-16, 2018, and will feature more than 30 bands and individual performers, providing a blend of all kinds of acoustic music: bluegrass, folk, old-time country, a little bit cowboy, Celtic, blues, jazz, swing and more. Taking the stage at #WVF47 will be Opal Agafia & The Sweet Nothings, Balsam Range, Stephen Bennett, Byron Berline, Roz Brown & Jim Ratts, Tom Chapin & Friends, Crary, Evans & Barnick, Bing Futch, Beppe Gambetta, GASS, Marley’s Ghost, Andy May, John McCutcheon, Joshua Messick Trio, Mountain Smoke, The Outside Track, Barry Patton, Mark Sganga, JoAnn Smith, Socks in the Frying Pan, Dave Stamey, The Steel Wheels, Still on the Hill, Billy Strings, Linda Tilton, Molly Tuttle and Barry Ward. Several pre-festival workshops, delivered by festival performers, will kick things off on September 12. Eight acoustic instrument contests, including two international and five national competitions, will be held over the course of the festival. Along with the National Flat-Pick Championships and the International Finger Style Championships, the Walnut Valley Festival hosts the International Autoharp, National Mandolin, National Mountain Dulcimer, National Hammered Dulcimer, National Bluegrass Banjo, and Walnut Valley Old Time Fiddle Championships. A large juried arts and crafts show includes displays of painting, jewelry, woodcrafts, glass, metalwork, baskets, pottery, weaving/spinning, leather, herbals & soaps, children's items, a pantry section of food-related items and much more. A number of luthiers and makers of accessories for various instruments are also on hand during the festival.
