Visit with National Park Service volunteers at the one-room schoolhouse on weekends from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. in May, June, September, and October. Learn about the importance the school played in a rural education on the prairie. Desks, McGuffey readers, slates, books, maps, recitation bench, and exhibits are on display. School is open daily May - December from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is located two miles north of Strong City on Kansas State Highway 177 (the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway) and is a unique public/private partnership between the National Park Service and The Nature Conservancy.
