Visit with National Park Service volunteers at the one-room schoolhouse on weekends, Saturday and Sunday, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. in May, June, September, and October. Learn about the importance the school played in a rural education on the prairie. Desks, McGuffey readers, slates, books, maps, recitation bench, and exhibits are on display. School is open daily May - December from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Inclement weather closes the schoolhouse, but visitors may look in the windows. Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is located two miles north of Strong City on Kansas State Highway 177 (the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway) and is a unique public/private partnership between the National Park Service and The Nature Conservancy.
