After forty-seven years the band KANSAS is coming back to Marshall County. The band made their debut performance in the area at the Valley Heights High School prom in 1971. For this gig they will travel a little farther north to headline “KANSAS Rocks The Oregon Trail” Saturday, September 22, at Alcove Spring Historic Park. The park is located six miles north of Blue Rapids and six miles south of Marysville. The band will play in a 246-acre largely undeveloped park. Located on the historic Oregon-California Trail, the site was the stopping place for many wagon trains, including the legendary Donner-Reed party. The name of the park comes from the Alcove Spring and Naomi Pike falls both located on the premises and accessible by walking trails. Wagon swales remain showing the mark the pioneers left on the land. Alcove Spring Historic Park is on East River Road; travelers should take U.S. Highway 77 to reach gravel roads leading to the park. Gates to the park open at 3 p.m. The opening band, to be announced in June, will take the stage at 6 p.m. KANSAS will perform at 7 p.m. The Marshall County concert is their last stop on their “KANSAS Radio Classics and Fan Favorites” tour. Food and drinks will be available at dining tents and food concession stands. There is plenty of free parking for cars, trucks, SUVs, and motorhomes. Shuttles and a walking trail connect parking to the location. There are no electrical hookups at the park. KANSAS has a legendary career spanning more than four decades; this “garage band” from Topeka released their debut album in 1974. They have sold more than thirty million albums worldwide.
