WaKeeney has held the title of "Christmas City of the High Plains" since 1950. Each November Downtown WaKeeney is magically transformed into a holiday wonderland, which lights up the prairie skies from the Saturday following Thanksgiving till after New Year's. The display is lit every night from 6:00 - 10:00 pm. The centerpiece is a magnificent, hand-made, 35-foot tree of fresh pine greenery which is located in the center of the downtown intersection at Main & Russell Ave. The tree rests under a canopy of heavenly blue lights and is topped with four ivory stars that crown the tree. To complete this Christmas wonderland, a four square block area around the tree is draped with more greenery and garlands; handcrafted wreaths, bells & stars; and more twinkling lights. In all, there are over 6,300 colored lights, 600 lbs. of fresh pine greenery, and 1100 yards of greenery garlands throughout the display. Visitors come from miles around to see this impressive light display, which is considered one of the largest Christmas Tree and lighting displays between Kansas City & Denver. And, of course, this holiday wonderland is free to the public. So plan to bring your family to WaKeeney this Christmas Season and join us during this magical time of year.
