Beaumont
Beaumont, in Butler County, is located on US 400 in south central Kansas.
Beaumont was a cattle town and an important point of the Frisco Railroad. The first line entered the area in 1880, heading west to Wichita. Later, the Beaumont Subdivision was established and a second line was built southwestward, through Winfield and Arkansas City. Among the facilities at Beaumont were a five-stall roundhouse, cattle pens, and a water tower.
Nestled in the lush, rolling Flint Hills, the Beaumont Hotel has long been considered a jewel of the prairie. The hotel sprang to life in 1879 as a stagecoach way station and hotel for cattlemen and railroaders. It has evolved into a destination for private pilots. In addition to the hotel, are 66 acres, including a 2,400 foot grass airstrip. Legendary in the Midwest, the Beaumont Hotel has gained notoriety for visitors who taxi down Main Street and park their planes in front of the hotel.
The 1885 Frisco Water Tower is now listed on the National and State Register of Historic Sites. The last remaining Frisco built wooden water tower of its kind in the USA provided water for steam locomotives, other train operations, and the stockyards for cattle being shipped in to pasture on the bountiful bluestem grass of the Flinthills.
