Hunting
Hunting has a long rich heritage in Kansas. With 300,000 acres of public land and more than 1 million acres of private land open to hunters, the state offers an abundance of pheasants, deer, quail, turkey and geese.
Most hunters know Western Kansas as a pheasant hunter's paradise. Fewer are aware that the hedgerows and farms of southeast Kansas provide some of the nation's best bobwhite quail hunting. In eastern Kansas, whitetail deer are plentiful and many bucks reach trophy size. Farther west, you can stalk mule deer. Some hunters even win the chance via permit lotteries to harvest elk and antelope from the state's small, but growing herds.
Turkey flourish from one end of the state to the other. Geese, ducks and teal congregate by the tens of thousands along pools and marshes under the Central Flyway. Squirrels, rabbits and other small game remain plentiful.
Public Access
You can hunt more than 300,000 acres of public land that the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks owns or manages.
Walk-In Access
More than 1 million acres of Kansas farmland are open to bird, deer and small game hunters as a result of the state and its ranchers and farmers working together. Through the Walk-In Hunting Area program, private land is leased by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and parks for seasonal hunting.
Other Access
You can also access land via outfitters, guides and private hunting preserves. These Controlled Shooting Areas are private fee-to-hunt areas licensed by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.
