An accredited Western-history museum located on the original site of Boot Hill Cemetery.
Life in 1876 Dodge City is interpreted through exhibits and visual programs. A reconstruction of Dodge City in 1876 and Old West restorations consist of historic and reconstructed buildings. The one-block reconstruction of Front Street, the business district of Old Dodge City which was destroyed by fire in 1885, was carefully researched through historic photographs. Historic buildings include an 1879 cattleman's home, the jail from Fort Dodge, a one-room school, and a church (currently under renovation). The recently renovated exhibits, interpretive programs and theatrical performances provide a glimpse into the town's early history when it was a buffalo hunters' trade center and, later, a cattle town. The Museum opened 13 new exhibits in March 2004. Accredited by the American Association of Museums. Daily summer entertainment includes living history presentations, stagecoach rides through downtown, gunfight re-enactments, chuckwagon dinner and a Long Branch Saloon Variety Show offered every evening Memorial Day weekend through mid-August. The chuckwagon dinner is available year-round for groups by reservation.
