She was born and raised in New York and New Jersey. After college, she spent 20 years in California before moving to the Midwest to pursue a doctorate in psychology. Photography provides a wonderful creative outlet and a means of escape for her. Her professional work as a psychologist can sometimes be intense and she turned to photography for a fun and adventurous distraction. What started as a hobby has become a passion. She lives in Lawrence and spends a lot of time at Clinton Lake exploring and shooting sunrises, sunsets, and moonrises. She also enjoys traveling around the beautiful state of Kansas looking for new places to photograph and meeting interesting people. She is proud to be a card carrying Kansas Explorer! A degree in Landscape Architecture (Kansas State University, 1980) combined with a passion for the tallgrass prairie gave, Dennis a strong interest in the natural history of Kansas, its landforms and the unique ecosystems found here. After earning a master's degree in theology, Dennis taught biblical literature for a decade in France. The call of Kansas, however, brought Dennis home to the prairie, where he worked briefly in the divergent careers of sports writing and tourism. Even with this varied background, a day spent hiking in the Flint Hills is Dennis' favorite way to spend a day. Readers can follow his passion for the prairie at www.flinthillstallgrass.org. With Amy, his wife of 30-plus years and a Kansas native herself, Dennis lives in Manhattan, along with four daughters, a son-in-law, and two granddaughters close at hand. Dennis' work in KANSAS! That's one way to explain the years this Kansas farm girl spent wandering the country, living in places like Chicago, Arizona and California. But, Lou Ann couldn't leave Kansas forever and, like Dorothy, always knew there was no place like her Kansas home. Lou Ann has been writing since she first learned to print and that, coupled with a lifelong love of office supplies, was the impetus for her decision to make writing her career. Lou Ann has written for a number of publications and is the author of Stories from a Life in Progress, chosen by the National Federation of Press Women as the Best Non-fiction Humor Book in 2007. Lou Ann still considers the biggest thrill, and honor, to be a contributor to KANSAS! magazine because it so beautifully reflects the state she loves and its people. Lou Ann's work with KANSAS! A native Iowan, Kimberly confesses her love and admiration of the hard-working, creative and industrious people that make the state of Kansas come alive for not only residents, but visitors who come seeking the answer to the proverbial question: "Why is there no place like home in Kansas?" Kimberly pens her prose on food, design, sustainability, lifestyle and people for national, regional and local publications. A former corporate manager and caterer, she considers herself a creative gypsy whose greatest talent is in uncovering the simple authenticity of what makes life in the Sunflower State so darned appealing.   Kimberly's work in KANSAS! Snell-writer http://www.travelks.com/media-room/articles/view/Sally-M-Snell-writer/761/ Sally M. Snell - writer - Lawrence Sally's Kansas roots stretch back to 1870 when her great-great grandmother arrived in Topeka with guitar in-hand to teach music at the College of the Sisters of Bethany. A lifelong Kansan herself, Sally grew up hearing about the lives of her forefathers, surviving the perils of fires and spring storms, struggling to raise a family in the face of war and a bleak economy, pursuing their dreams, and celebrating holiday traditions. Her interest in sharing other Kansan's stories and the rich history of the region was sparked while she was administrator for the State tourism program in the 1990s, and later attended focused workshops on travel writing through UCLA and the University of Iowa. Sally has contributed articles to dozens of national and regional publications, co-authored several books on a range of non-fiction topics, and garnered awards from the National Federation of Press Women for her work. Originally from north of the 49th parallel, she followed the yellow brick road to a warmer climate & now calls west central KS home. The goal of her photography is to show there is beauty to be found everywhere and in everything. KS offers some of the most wonderful opportunities to do just that whether it is in the farm yard or watching the sun set. A huge fan of rural life, she is always trying to make the ordinary look extraordinary. Her work has appeared in several magazines & calendars, and she enjoys entering photo competitions with numerous wins to her credit. Her work has been displayed in Times Square in New York and when not competing, she also judges photo contests. A relatively new resident to KS, she enjoys KS Magazine immensely and uses it as her guide to keep up with interesting things to see & do around the state. More of her work can be viewed at tinaschmittphotography.com Thu, 15 Nov 2012 07:00:00 GMT http://www.travelks.com/media-room/articles/view/Tina-Schmitt-photographer/760/ Harland Schuster-photographer http://www.travelks.com/media-room/articles/view/Harland-Schuster-photographer/759/ Harland Schuster - Photographer - Morrill Harland Schuster is a freelance photographer based in northeast Kansas and a native of the Sunflower state. His work has appeared in numerous publications and recently, two books: The 8 Wonders of Kansas Guidebook and My Kansas. More examples of his work, and photographic prints available for purchase may be viewed on his website at www.harlandschuster.com. Though his photographic adventures have at times taken him far from home, he waxes poetic when the subject turns to his native state. According to Schuster, "Kansas is a place were silence can touch your soul more deeply than the roar of ocean waves crashing ashore. It's a place where the sheer multitude of colors of a high plains sunrise can overwhelm your senses more than the view from any mountaintop. But chances are you'll drive right past all these if you're in a hurry. More than anything else, appreciating Kansas requires patience. In today's fast-paced, instant gratification society, this can be a challenge. But if you are up to it, Kansas will reward your patience with a beauty and richness you never expected." Raised on the outskirts of Kansas City there was ample time in his youth to wander the hills and streams with friends as they searched endlessly to quench youthful curiosity. Wayne feels most at home when behind the camera, immersed in nature and natural settings. Like other nature photographers, Wayne shares a burning desire to experience firsthand the flora and fauna of our earth while striving to understand mankind's intimate role in the preservation of the vanishing natural environment. Wayne's credits include winning the inaugural National Wildlife Federation's "Our Public Lands" photo contest in 2008. Wayne has been published in Nature Photographer Magazine, Birds and Blooms magazine and he was commissioned to shoot the cover for County magazine's Summer 2006 issue. Wayne's image portfolio was recently selected as the Featured Portfolio on Nature Photographers Network's online magazine. www.rhodusphotography.com Wayne's work with Kansas! It has been her privilege to work as a Registered Nurse for more than 25 years at Stormont-Vail HealthCare in Topeka. In addition to photography, she designs and creates stained glass and pencil drawings. In her photography, she tries to find the beauty in nature and make it unusual and evocative. At times the subjects she chooses might be ordinary but photographed in a unique manner, using the natural light or the weather. Sometimes the subjects create themselves. With any medium she is using, her best work seems to evolve. She believes Kansas to be one of the most beautiful places on earth, especially the changing seasons and variety of topography. KANSAS! magazine does an excellent job of providing the opportunity for photographers to showcase their work. She has aspired to have her photographs published in KANSAS! magazine since she saw my first copy. Karen's work in KANSAS!
