When she's not writing, she explores the small towns that dot the prairie, or tastes the homemade specials at mom and pop cafes. Anita also enjoys driving the backcountry roads to discover the undiscovered. In her spare time she is making her own big ball of twine and while it will never overshadow the king of twine in Cawker City, it may someday hold the title of "largest in Shawnee County." Bill has been interested in photography for as long as he can remember, and in 1995 he got serious about his craft and created Coastal Plains Images as an outlet so the public could also enjoy his photographs. Bill's primary focus is as a Nature and Wildlife photographer. He loves photographing all areas of Kansas, but specializes in the Flint Hills and surrounding areas. Bill's work has been seen in several publications, specifically KANSAS! magazine, and is on permanent display at the Derby City Library. Bill's goal is to show the world that, contrary to popular belief, Kansas is not flat and boring, but is diverse, unique, engaging and beautiful!     Bill's work with KANSAS! She remembers following a moving van with her husband and three little girls as they drove north out of Texas across the Red River 20 years ago. They were off to a new home and life in Kansas. At the very moment they crossed the state line, David Bowie's Changes rang forth from the radio. "Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes/Turn and face the strange," the lyrics encouraged. Strange at the time, it's been a great change to make Kansas home. Katherine regularly contributes to Lawrence Magazine and other publications while also working with homeless families and individuals through Family Promise of Lawrence and Five Loaves House in Lawrence. As the daughter of an artist and naturalist, her combination of art and nature was inherent. She has Bachelor's degrees from the University of Kansas and a Master degree from the University of San Diego and enjoyed a career in college counseling at USD and KU for 10 years. During this time, she continued her photography through classes, competitions and publications. After time away from her career to raise her children, she had a revelation and discovered her true passion is photography. Her fascination with the details of nature's composition led to a distinctive, macro, perspective of the natural features Kansas has to offer. Her goal is to create unique views that evoke emotion, spark conversation, create wonder to convey her own respect and awe of nature. Her work has been exhibited in Kansas City at ARTichoke's Gallery, 2631 Gallery and as part of Crossroads' First Fridays. She has been selected for juried exhibitions including the Kansas/KC Camera Juried Photography Exhibition, the Johnson County Art Fest Exhibition, the River to Well Photo Exhibition, the Art at the Center Overland Park Photo Exhibition and has pieces in several corporate collections. Gary notes that as they have grown older they have also grown more aware and fond of the beauty of their "home" state. They enjoy photography as a hobby and feel that KANSAS! magazine does a great job of portraying the diversity found here. They are proud to share their photos with them for others to enjoy; aptly noting, "Photography is a lot like the state of Kansas, there is a lot to learn and the more you look the more you will find." His passion (or addiction) for photography grew from a desire to simply be outside. "I love to drive the back roads and explore places I've never been before while ‘hunting' for the right moment to stop and create a photograph," he says. Why photograph Kansas? Scott knows many people think that Kansas is simply one large, flat featureless field. There is no doubt that fields are important to Kansas, we do feed a big part of the world after all. And to Scott, fields have their own beauty, "A Kansas wheat field with a gentle breeze blowing across it during a summer sunset is a wonderful sight." Likewise, fall colors are enhanced by the corn and milo fields across the state. Kansas has many diverse landscapes to experience; short grass and tall grass prairies, forests, sandstone canyons, limestone rock formations, and yes even hills (lots of them in fact). If you haven't experienced the different landscapes of Kansas then you are missing out on something special-that "something special" is why Scott photographs Kansas. Scott's work with KANSAS!
