Guests are transported back to a time when some homes along the Santa Fe Trail served as eating places. Delicious, made-from-scratch American Indian, Old World, Early American, and 20th-Century foods are featured as part of the museum experience. History comes alive here, where fascinating historic stories are shared. Surrounded by artifacts and period styling from the mid-1800s, guests may explore the house, a small adult and children's library and learning corner, and the Maple Camp grounds. They may also learn about a rare Indian pictograph carved into the original walnut casing of the parlor's back door. In addition to the Terwilliger Home, the Maple Camp grounds feature the 1858 Atkinson log house, a 1902 one-room school house, a 1930 tourist cabin, a 1943 duplex cabin which housed World War II personnel serving at the Herington Army Air Field, and the 1947 Baker's Market building (which is being converted into the Maple Camp Arts & History Center). Also on the grounds is a living history exhibit of a chicken house and yard with six varieties of laying hens on display from Spring to Fall. Much American history can be viewed at this one stop.
