A large museum tells the history of the Plains Indians, Mexicans and Americans along the historic route of the Santa Fe Trail. Their stories are interwoven through exploration, trade, settlement and conflict. Visitors of all ages will enjoy the prehistoric artifacts, the Wichita Indian Grass Lodge and a full size mounted buffalo. The extensive collections include early settlement of Pawnee County. An outdoor Museum with sod and dugout houses, a one-room schoolhouse, limestone cooling house, Santa Fe Railroad Depot,Escue Chapel and two buildings dedicated to historic farm equipment and autos are open to visitors. Living history programs are offered at some special events held at the museum. Tours available with advance reservations. Closed Sunday and Monday year round. Monday tour arrangements can be made by calling in advance.
