For 22 years (1825 - 1847) this massive Bur Oak tree served as an "unofficial post office" as passing west-bound wagon trains would drop mail destined for the eastern US in a natural cache at the base of this tree. East-bound travelers would, as a courtesy, pick up the deposited mail and carry it to some eastern destination having an official US Post Office where the mail would be "officially" dispatched. East-bound travelers also took advantage of this "temporary" post office and deposited their western-headed mail for the next wagon train going that direction to pick up and take to their destination.
