The mission of the Insect Zoo is to foster a better understanding and increased awareness of our natural world and of the important roles that insects and their relatives play in it.Created as an opportunity to impact science and natural history education, and provide a facility where the public can experience live arthropods and become acquainted with the discipline of entomology. Visitors to the Insect Zoo experience the sights, sounds, and smells of live creepy crawlies, including giant cockroaches, beetles, centipedes, scorpions, tarantulas, walking sticks, and praying mantises.Visitors can explore the zoo on their own in a self-guided tour. The Insect Zoo features a number of exciting educational exhibits including the Tropical tree/flooded Amazonian Rainforest, the Desert-Scape, Tropical Cave, Giant Leafcutter Ant colony, observation beehive, and a mock kitchen. For a more in-depth discussion with trained staff, please call ahead and schedule a guided tour. During guided tours, visitors can “pet” some of the animals including millipedes, walkingsticks, and tarantulas.
