Hays has over 20 parks with a variety of amenities including baseball & soccer fields, basketball & volleyball courts, horseshoes, disc golf, open play areas, hiking trails, restrooms, picnic shelters, flower plantings, skate park, historical markers and a variety of playground equipment at most of the parks. The two largest, oldest and most scenic parks are Frontier Park and Municipal park located on the south end of downtown Hays. The two newest parks are Vineyard Road Park and the Bickle Schmidt Sports Complex. The Vineyard Road park is currently being developed in it’s natural state with walking trails and foot bridges that cross the stream. The Bickle Schmidt Sports Complex is located on the west edge of Hays and was completed in the fall of 2011. It has eight baseball/softball fields, 8 football/soccer fields and is home to the Fort Hays State University soccer complex.
Five locations that feature hiking and walking trails are Frontier Park West, Howard Reynolds Nature Trail, Hays Medical Center Fitness Trail, O’Loughlin School O.W.L Site (Outdoor Wildlife Learning Site) and East Frontier Park. All of these walking trails wind along a stream or near a pond, through wooded tree lined paths and have varied terrain. All would be considered easy to moderate walking.
