Located on the west side of Picken Hall on the campus of Fort Hays State University is a beautiful rose garden. Funded by a bequest from Jean Stouffer, former associate dean of students, 1955-76, a garden of more than 300 fragrant rose bushes was planted on the west side of Picken Hall to replace a similar garden that existed before the flood dike was built along the border of the campus. The stone marker from the earlier rose garden was placed in the new one.
Near the rose garden is the Dick Heil Memorial Butterfly Garden. It is located on the north side of Martin Allen Hall, which is just to the northwest of Picken Hall. Dr. Richard Heil was the former chair of the Department of Political Science and Justice Studies and professor of political science at FHSU for more than 40 years. He retired from the university in 2006 and shortly afterwards moved to the Kansas City area. Dr. Heil was an active volunteer with the Hays Optimist Club for the last 10 years he resided in Hays. He died at the age of 68 on October 31, 2009, and the dedication of this garden took place on the first anniversary of his death. Friends, FHSU staff and members of the community turned out for the dedication ceremony on Sunday October 31, 2010.
