The Flint Hills National Scenic Byway provides a glimpse of where the West begins in the vistas of open spaces and undisturbed views of rolling hills covered with dense prairie grasses, wildflowers, and the endless sky that are the Tallgrass Prairie. Nearly two-thirds of the continent's surviving Tallgrass Prairie resides within the Flint Hills, much of it visible from the Byway. From Council Grove at the northern terminus, where you experience the stepping off point for the Santa Fe Trail, to the Prairie Chicken Capital of Cassoday at the southern terminus, the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway offers the traveler the endless horizon of the Tallgrass Prairie. The traveler also can visit the Kaw Heritage Nation Park to learn the stories of the Native Americans, then visit the Kaw Mission State Historic Site to learn how the Natives and the Euro-Americans interacted. Travelers can see the remains of the Council Oak where the treaty was signed allowing safe passage on the Santa Fe Trail, where wagon travelers could obtain supplies at the Last Chance Store, then travel south on the Byway to experience the expanse of the Prairie.A stop at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve will provide continuation of the story of man's stewardship of the natural beauty of the Flint Hills and an opportunity to see wildflowers and tallgrass up close. The story of the cattle industry on the Prairie is told there as well. The traveler can stop in Strong City to learn about the railroad's arrival on the Prairie. Visitor can then drive to Cottonwood Falls to see the beauty of the Flint Hills limestone transformed into the Chase County Courthouse and other buildings downtown. Heading south, the visitor can stop at the Scenic Overlook to get a 360-degree view of the prairie. The Byway then drops down into the river valley where the beauty of the Pioneer Bluffs-Rogler Ranch Historic District can be enjoyed. Matfield Green is another stopping point along the byway. At the south end of the Byway, the traveler can enjoy the hospitality at Cassoday. On the first Sundays in May through October, more than 3,000 motorcyclists gather to tour the Byway. If the Byway visitor extends a stay for overnight, the majesty of the galaxies over the prairie provides a breathtaking experience never to be forgotten.
