Angela grew up in Pasadena, California but her family's sojourns to Nicodemus made such an indelible impression on her that as an adult she relocated to the area and became an advocate for her ancestral home.
One nomination said:
"Ms. Bates has worked tirelessly on behalf of Nicodemus. Her efforts culminated in Nicodemus being named a National Historical Site, staffed by the National Park Service. This recognition and promotion of this cultural and social asset is extremely important for tourism in Kansas."
