According to the Lucia legend, Sweden was in the throes of an appalling famine and at the peak of the terrible winter a white ship, shining with light, laden with food and at the helm a beautiful girl, came across the waters of Lake Vännern in the province of Värmland. The food was distributed and the starving saved.
To honor Lucia, whose name is derived from lux meaning light, the eldest daughter of Swedish families awakens early on December 13 morning to serve a traditional tray of saffron buns, ginger cookies and coffee to her family. She wears a white gown with a red sash and a crown of lingonberry branches with seven lit candles. The green and light represent new life in the climax of the Winter Solstice.
Music and festivities begin downtown at 10:30 a.m. The Lindsborg Swedish Dancers and Lindsborg Folkdanslag will engage in a routine of traditional folk dances downtown at 1:30 p.m. Then a processional starting at 2:45 p.m. will go to the Bethany Lutheran Church. At the church the 2014 Lucia Meagan DeVore will be crowned by Lindsborg's Mayor Bill Taylor at 3 p.m. with a candle-lit service to follow.
